BAFA Graduation Work 2025 – The Distance Between Me And Myself Part 2 我和我之間的距離 第二部分

In this moment of my life, I feel ensnared—trapped by external forces that render me passive and helpless. My journey revolves around the desire to break free from this constraining state. The project I present reveals this struggle; it narrates my attempts to escape a feeling of confinement.

Every time I embark on an unknown bus, heading toward an uncertain destination, I consciously choose the unfamiliar over remaining stagnant. Upon disembarking, my feet instinctively seek pathways that reclaim my agency, my desire to forge my own direction. With each step, I embrace the unknown, not knowing where the road may lead but determined to strive for liberation.

This body of work is a metaphorical exploration of walking—a pursuit that superficially engages with the landscape of Hong Kong while delving deeper into my inner desire to escape. Photography, for me, is an act of choice; every moment I capture reflects a decision—a pause in the continuum of my experience. The choice to photograph a scene signifies a deeper wish to preserve what resonates, to articulate fragments of my journey. Each snapshot embodies not randomness but a deliberate engagement with the world around me.

As I reflect on these captured moments, I realize that their significance has evolved over time. Relationships and engagements, once seemingly vital, have lost their solidity; what felt essential in one instant can diminish in another. The images, while visually unremarkable, echo this transition. They become markers of a mental landscape—faded and ambiguous, as I grapple with the absence of a clear objective. Ultimately, my photographs echo a profound understanding: life, in its essence, is a journey through uncertainty. Each frame is a testament to my quest for meaning amidst the flux, a silent exploration of both my surroundings and my inner self.

A map of Hong Kong Island.

Every line on the map connects to the locations from my home and the places where I stopped to take photos while exploring.

This is a handmade book with dimensions of 20×20×20 cm, sewn together with a single 20-meter long thread.

Every picture in it is a photo taken from a point on the map where I stopped to capture the moment.

Two notebooks.

Containing records of every location I photographed, a diary entry for every journey, and any other documentations related to my exploration.

A film camera, with a roll of unfinished film inside.

Every moment of the journey was captured with this camera, and the film that has not yet been fully exposed remains forever inside this camera.

The end of a journey is not a destination, but rather the starting point of another exploration, allowing us to move forward.
